Nienna is the younger sister of Mandos and Lorien. She lives alone. Long before the living creatures of Ea came to be she was already deploring the grievous damage Melkor would do to the newborn world. It is said that Nienna’s motive in the Song of the Ainur had turned into lamentation long before Creation began, and so the melody of sadness was interwoven into the essence of Arda. Even though it is sadness that Nienna commands, she brings not hopelessness and gloom, but hope and wisdom to those who listen to her.

Olorin, the wisest of the Maiar, who was later known in Middle-earth as Gandalf, was one of her students.
