Ulmo by John HoweUlmo is the Lord of Waters, and in water – in the oceans, seas and rivers of the world – lies his domain and his strength. It is often said that Ulmo’s breath and spirit is in every tiny brook and stream, every drip of water, and that he has great lore which he acquired by exploring the unfathomable depths of the great ocean. Storms and waves arise and calm down at his bidding, and in their fluidity he delights. He seldom goes ashore to join the Valar in their councils, except when grave circumstances are at hand. Even rarer is his apparition before the Eruhini, and in fact the only known encounter between Ulmo and a mortal was when the Vala spoke to Turin Turambar, and for that purpose he assumed a shape which could be perceived by the eye – which he rarely did.

Ulmo is alone and lives not in Valinor, but in a palace underwater. Nevertheless, even after the Darkening of Valinor, even when all the other Valar ignored the desperate pleas of the Men and Elves of Middle-earth, and the Dark Lord was gathering more and more lands under his sway – Ulmo never abandoned Middle-earth and its people, often helping them in counsel and lending them courage and strength.
