Yavanna Kementari is the spouse of Aule, being among the Valier second to Varda only in reverence. She is the creator of the first living things that inhabited Arda; she made the seeds of the first plants and strew them across the barren soil so that the world would be covered in lush vegetation when the Children of Eru would come to be. She also created many species of animal life (the kelvar) so that the world would abound in living creatures. She keep in mind all the countless forms of plants and animals, the olvar being her closest protégées. Among other things, Yavanna played a crucial part in the making of Laurelin and Telperion, the Trees of Valinor, in comparison to the light of which the blaze of the Silmarils was but a weak and sullied reflection.

Yavanna’s wards and helpers are the Ents, the Tree-shepherds, the oldest of all the living creatures of Arda.
