Celeborn

Also called “the Wise”. In translation from Sindarin the name Celeborn means “Silver tree”. The spouse of Galadriel, he dwelt in Doriath during the First Age. After Doriath was thrice laid waste (first by Morgoth, then by the dwarves of Nogrod and finally by the sons of Feanor), they took up their abode in Lindon in Middle-earth, and established the kingdom of Lorien afterwards. There they lived in peace until the end of the Third Age, when the war for the Ring was rekindled. When the Fellowship of the Ring left the mines of Moria, they were welcomed in Lothlorien by Galadriel and her husband. After Sauron was defeated, his allies in Dol-Guldur assailed Lorien, and grievous damage was done to its woods. However, Celeborn not only repelled their attacks, but armed a fleet that crossed the Anduin and laid siege on Dol-Guldur. The fortress was captured, and then Galadriel “threw down its walls and laid bare its pits, and the forest was cleansed”. Galadriel soon departed over the Sea, but at first Celeborn did not wish to join her. He remained for a while in Lorien, but its population quickly dwindled and the beautiful woods were soon desolate. Finally Celeborn could not stand the loneliness and joined his wife in Aman.
